Lazaretto and the old city harbour

Dubrovnik, as a very important naval and trade harbour in the medieval times, was welcoming travelers from all corners of the world. In that time, a number of contageous diseases was spreading around the globe and the city of Dubrovnik, as the first city in the world, in the 14th century, delivered an order by which the lazarettos, isolation hospitals for travelers coming from suspicious areas, were built. The travellers had to spend 30 days in isolation before entering the city, so this order brought the first quarantine in the world. Lazarettos were built on Cavtat and on the islands of Mrkan, Bobara and Supetar. The last constructed lazaretto was built in the 17th century and it is located next to one of the city's entrances: Ploče. It serves today as an event venue for concerts, theatre shows and art workshops.
